We have all certainly seen a 2014 that will live long in the memory. It still seems almost dreamlike that we welcomed the Tour De France to Ilkley and helped make it the grandest of all Grand Departs.
As well as seeing the popularity and interest of cycling growing amongst the wider population, we have also seen the club move on leaps and bounds. Again we saw an amazingly successful White Rose Classic, where amateur riders enjoyed the Yorkshire Dales at their very best. We also saw the continuation of our Cyclocross Race and Time-Trials, setting the standards locally for promoting and supporting those wanting to make the move into competitive action.
On top of this we have seen two hugely successful new events. The AvantiGas 2-day team stage race in May was an outstanding success seeing the best of local amateur teams doing their upmost to battle for team prizes and the honour of wearing yellow, green and polka dot jerseys. Our own team was victorious and the event gained huge levels of thanks from those competing and spectating.
Our Town Centre Races on an Ilkley closed-road circuit was another outstanding success for the club. The whole town came out in force to enjoy the spectacle of the brave souls battling round the challenging circuit and that amazing finish down The Grove. It was the perfect precursor to the professionals coming through just a few days later. Remind yourself of the magic of the evening through this wonderful video: https://vimeo.com/99834399
Both of these two events are hoped to be repeated and the club and whole town are very thankful for those giving up their time to put these events on.
From a competitive perspective, our racers have had an amazing year and finished 4th in the British Cycling Yorkshire ranking. This is an improvement on previous years and it is worth reflecting that the only teams above us are from sponsored commercial outfits. This success was further highlighted with Ben and Ewan taking to the startline for the National Championships, and putting in outstanding performances.
Our local hero, Scott Thwaites, has also had a great year – who can forget that rainy day in Glasgow when he battled to a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. Scott continues to be an inspiration, especially to the youngsters, and we wish him all the very best for a successful 2015.
Of course the club is far more than those at the competitive end, and we have seen the breadth and depth of opportunities to ride increasing further. Almost every day of the week there are opportunities to be part of a club activity, and whatever your fitness level or aspirations, you can find a ride to suit your needs.
The club this year has gained Charity Status, and this is recognition that the aims and objectives of the club are geared to ensure inclusive cycling can be extended as far as possible. With this in mind we have been working with Bradford Council to find an appropriate location to provide a safe and inclusive cycling facility. We hope these plans will mature and be realised during 2015.
Special mention must also be made to Liz Barrett and the youth coaching team who have re-energised the youth development programme and are building a range of fun activities for children to be involved in.
These are just a few highlights from the year, so please explore the website for more details about all aspects of the club.
It is worth remembering that this amazing club is built solely on input from the members. There are no paid officials, and all members give what they can and take what they need. Please think about what you can give during 2015, whether leading a ride, helping out marshalling or registering, or even baking-cakes for an event. There are more substantial roles such as being on the committee or taking on coaching responsibilities. Or perhaps you are able to provide a charitable donation to support our aims for building a lasting cycling facility? If you would like any further information on any of these possibilities, then please email me in confidence at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Wisihing you peace and goodwill for the coming year,
Secretary, Ilkley Cycling Club
