The WRC is considered to be one of, if not the, premier road cycling sportive in the region. Re-established in 2012 by the then newly formed Ilkley Cycling Club, this sell-out 1000 rider event aims to provide a challenging day out through some of the most spectacular Yorkshire Dales scenery….taking in some of its classic (read toughest) climbs! With three routes to choose from, the event provides for differing levels of ability and experience. It thus attracts a range of participants from whippet-like club riders looking for a gold standard time to those looking for a more leisurely but challenging day out in the saddle. The event is organised and run by club volunteers in conjunction with British Cycling. It raises money for local and national charities and also helps fund Ilkley Cycling Club’s Youth Development Programme, promoting cycling at grass-roots level in the area.
The short route (50miles/80km/+1447m) loops out to Grassington and back; the medium route (84miles/135km) continues from Grassington to Halton Gill, looping round to Settle and rejoining the route at Burnsall; the long route (115miles/183km) splits from the medium route at Kilnsey and heads right out to Hawes, swinging east to Garsdale Head and then heading south to rejoin the medium route at Stainforth. The routes are signed and supported by Feedstations at Grassington (all routes), Airton (med/long) and Hawes (long only).
The event starts and ends at Ilkley Rugby Club (LS29 0BZ) where there will be free event parking, toilets and changing facilities and refreshments, including hot and cold food. The Rugby Club is on the edge of the town centre so it’s an ideal opportunity to make a day of it and bring along family and friends who can enjoy all Ilkley has to offer whilst you ride and cheer you in on your return. There’s Ilkley Lido on one side of the HQ and the town’s parks and riverside on the other, as well as the famous Cow and Calf Rocks and Ilkley Moor within walking distance. The town centre itself is crammed full of local shops, cafes and restaurants. Start times for each route will be within the following:- Long (6.30am – 9.30am), Medium (7.30am – 9.30am), Short (8.30am – 10.00am). The event will close at 6.30pm.
Le Tour 2014 - Le Grand Depart Yorkshire
In case you hadn’t noticed, the Tour De France, the biggest cycling event in the world, kicks off with its Grand Depart in Yorkshire in 2014 and passes through Ilkley on Stage 1 on Saturday 5th July and nearby Addingham on Stage 2 on Sunday 6th July. The White Rose Classic therefore kicks off a week of activities organised by Ilkley Cycling Club leading up to this exciting event, together with camping available for those travelling from further afield. This is therefore an ideal opportunity to enjoy a UK cycling holiday of a lifetime, kicking off with a sportive, taking advantage of local club rides and activities during the week and being in prime position to see the Le Tour pass through the following weekend.
